Florida heat can be brutal, especially in Fort Myers and Cape Coral, where high temperatures and humidity can make both people and pets feel like they are wearing a wet blanket. So when you look at a fluffy Golden Retriever, Husky, German Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, Pomeranian, or another double-coated breed, shaving all that fur off may seem like the obvious way to help them stay cool.
In most cases, though, shaving a double-coated dog is not recommended.
A double coat is made up of two layers. The soft undercoat helps insulate the body, while the longer outer coat helps protect the skin from sun exposure, dirt, moisture, and environmental irritation. Together, those layers help regulate body temperature in both warm and cool weather.
That means the coat does more than keep your dog warm in winter. It also helps protect your dog from Florida’s intense sun and can play an important role in keeping excessive heat away from the skin.
Why Shaving Can Create Problems
When a double-coated dog is shaved too closely, the coat may not always grow back the same way. The undercoat can sometimes grow faster than the protective outer hairs, leaving the coat uneven, fuzzy, or more prone to matting.
Shaving can also expose skin that normally receives very little direct sunlight. In sunny Southwest Florida, that may increase the risk of sunburn and skin irritation.
Most importantly, shaving does not automatically make a dog cooler. Dogs regulate body temperature differently than humans do, primarily through panting and limited sweating through their paw pads. Removing their natural coat can interfere with the insulation system their body already uses.
What Should You Do Instead?
For most double-coated dogs, regular professional grooming is a better approach than shaving.
A thorough bath, blowout, brushing, and de-shedding treatment can remove loose undercoat that traps excess hair and prevents good airflow through the coat. Removing dead undercoat can make an enormous difference in how comfortable a dog feels without stripping away the protective outer layer.
Keeping the coat clean and free of mats is especially important in Florida. Humidity, swimming, rain, sand, and outdoor activity can quickly create tangles and compacted undercoat.
Routine grooming also gives your groomer an opportunity to notice changes in the skin, coat, paws, ears, or overall condition that owners may not immediately see at home.
Are There Times When Shaving Is Necessary?
There are exceptions. Severe matting, certain medical procedures, skin conditions, or recommendations from a veterinarian may make shaving necessary. If a coat has become badly matted, sometimes removing the mats safely is more important than preserving coat length. Trying to brush out severe matting can be painful and stressful for the dog. The decision should be based on the individual dog, coat condition, health, and comfort rather than simply the Florida temperature.
Keeping Double-Coated Dogs Comfortable in Southwest Florida
Beyond grooming, make sure your dog always has access to fresh water, shade, and air conditioning during the hottest parts of the day. Walk dogs earlier in the morning or later in the evening when possible, and remember that Florida pavement can become dangerously hot very quickly.
For double-coated breeds, the goal is usually not to remove the coat but to keep it healthy, clean, brushed, and free of excess undercoat.
